This phenomenon was first reported in 1927 by Austin and colleagues, 4 who recorded a blood pH of 7.70 in alligators kept at 7° to 11° C, a value considerably different from that of mammals kept in the same environment or alligators kept at 33° to 38° C. At first glance, acid-base regulation in poikilothermic (cold-blooded) animals appears to differ from that of homoiothermic (warm-blooded) animals, such as mammals, marsupials, and monotremes, because at cold ambient temperatures, the blood pH of a poikilothermic animal is considerably higher than that of a mammal. The normal blood pH for adult humans is 7.40, and this pH value is vigorously defended at normal body temperature.
